Mount Kinabalu carries a deep, mystical history woven into its very name. Local Kadazan-Dusun legends call the peak Aki Nabalu, meaning “The Sacred Place of the Dead,” where ancestral spirits reside in peace.
Another famous tale derives the name from Kina Balu, or “Chinese Widow.” According to legend, a Chinese prince climbed the treacherous mountain to retrieve a giant dragon pearl. He married a local Dusun woman but later returned to China, leaving her behind. Heartbroken, she climbed the high granite slopes every day to watch the sea for his return until she died of grief.

The Solemn Legacy of the Sandakan Death March
Beneath the tranquil beauty of the Kundasang highlands lies a poignant historical reminder of World War II. During the Japanese occupation, thousands of Allied prisoners of war endured the tragic Sandakan Death March across rugged jungle terrain.
