Labuan: The Historical Paradise of the Orient

Labuan holds a uniquely captivating place in Borneo’s history. Originally, the Sultan of Brunei ceded this tropical island to the British Crown in 1846. Planners immediately named the capital Victoria Town to honor their reigning monarch.

During this era, oil remained undiscovered, therefore coal fueled the global empire. Consequently, the British envisioned Labuan as a massive coaling hub for the Orient. Today, the mysterious brick Chimney at Tanjung Kubong still stands as a striking testament to that booming extraction era.

Echoes of War at Surrender Point

History took a violent turn a century later. Labuan became a critical, heavily contested battleground during World War II. Ultimately, it served as one of the few places in Borneo where Allied infantry made direct, fierce contact with Japanese occupiers. Following intense combat, the island finally witnessed peace again. On September 9, 1945, Japanese forces officially laid down their arms at what is now remembered as Surrender Point.

Honoring the Young Heroes of the War Memorial

Many authors have written poignant books detailing how incredibly young these WWII soldiers died. Consequently, visiting the Labuan War Cemetery brings this tragic literature to life. As you read the memorial plaques, you will discover fallen heroes as young as 17 years old.

Furthermore, this quiet resting place holds deep personal significance for my own family. My grandfather, Charles Peter, fought bravely alongside the famous Double Tenth Rebellion. Today, the memorial proudly honors his name among Borneo’s greatest wartime figures. Ultimately, this deeply moving site reminds every visitor of the true cost of peace.

Historic LGC and Brutal LIGC Golf Courses

Golfers visiting Labuan will discover two wildly different experiences. First, you can tee off at the deeply historic Labuan Golf Club (LGC). This classic layout beautifully echoes the island’s heritage. Alternatively, the Labuan International Golf Club (LIGC) offers a notoriously punishing modern challenge. Indeed, this specific course ranks among the hardest in Borneo. Therefore, you absolutely must pack dozens of used balls before tackling its unforgiving hazards!

Ancient Porcelains and Sunken Shipwrecks

Beyond the battlefields, this island hides astonishing treasures beneath the waves. Centuries ago, Ming Dynasty trading vessels passed through these exact waters. Consequently, explorers have uncovered ancient Chinese porcelains scattered near Pulau Enoe.

Furthermore, modern scuba divers flock here for world-class underwater adventures. Four major sunken shipwrecks currently rest off the coast, offering thrilling dives through submerged history.

Peaceful Islands and Kopitiam Culture

Meanwhile, above the water, absolute tranquility reigns supreme. Visitors can easily explore the pristine marine parks surrounding Pulau Rusukan Besar, Pulau Rusukan Kecil, and Pulau Papan. After a day of island hopping, Victoria Town offers a remarkably quiet, peaceful retreat.

Here, classic British-style kopitiams serve a fascinating fusion of regional cuisines. You can savor authentic Brunei Ambuyat for lunch, then enjoy fresh Chinese seafood for dinner.

Because of its strategic coastal location, Labuan offers immediate access to both Brunei and Sabah. Therefore, it remains a perfect time capsule for curious travelers.

Uncover the True Soul of Borneo!

In my book, The Eurasians, Jesselton is more than a setting. It is the gateway to the entire narrative. The story begins in 1964 during the Indonesian-Malaysian Confrontation. It follows the life of Aaron Johnson, an RAF pilot. He chose to stay in North Borneo and marry a local girl.

The story spans decades, including about Labuan, ending with the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis. A romantic tension fuels the plot when a young lawyer, William Stewart, falls in love with Aaron’s daughter. Their lives mirror the shifts of the city itself—resilient, complex, and deeply rooted in the soil of North Borneo.

To truly understand Borneo’s complex history, politics, and fragile environment, The Eurasians sums it all up in one gripping story. Author Don Peter weaves a multi-generational family saga across Malaysia’s most turbulent decades. The novel delivers shifting perspectives, high-stakes deception, and relentless action scenes. It captures the resilient spirit and raw realities of this enchanted island. Grab your copy of The Eurasians today and dive into the ultimate historical thriller!
